Showmanship is a judged class that scores how well an exhibitor presents, grooms, and controls an animal in the ring, not how good the animal itself is against a breed standard, which is what separates it from a cattle show. A showmanship judge watches the handler's positioning, the animal's cleanliness, and how calmly the pair responds to instructions, and a beginner with a plain animal can beat an experienced exhibitor with a prize-winning one if the handling is better. It is a staple of 4-H programming delivered through UMass Extension, and it appears at both the state's dedicated 4-H fairs and at the livestock rings of larger county agricultural fairs, wherever animals are recorded as a feature, true at 24 of the 98 events in this directory.
