A grandstand is the fixed, roofed seating that faces a fair's main arena or track. Crowds sit there for pulling contests, demolition derbies and harness racing. Judging in an exhibition hall or livestock barn is a walk-through event and needs no seat. The grandstand is where the ticketed or reserved-seat versions of a fair's contests usually happen. Smaller one-day town and Grange fairs often run their contests at ground level, with spectators along a rope line.
