A cattle show is a judged competition in which cattle are evaluated against a written breed standard, covering conformation, structure, and condition, which makes it the animal's contest rather than the handler's, the reverse of a showmanship class. It is one of the older event types on a Massachusetts fair grandstand or arena schedule, tracing back to the working-dairy and working-farm economy the state's agricultural societies were originally chartered to support. Animals are recorded as a feature at 24 of the 98 events in this directory, a smaller share than food at 82 or crafts at 55, which reflects how much livestock judging now depends on the smaller agricultural and 4-H fairs to keep the tradition running rather than on the largest, most attended events.
